Learn to play slow balls

When do I need to play a slow ball?

The advice in padel is often to slow the ball down, but how can we do that? Sandy discusses ways to use a softer ball tactically, even against fast, powerful hitters.

Hard hitting style

The aim is to slow down an opponent's hard-hitting style, not simply react to every hard shot with more speed. Many players come from tennis to padel and naturally play quickly. You can change the rhythm by choosing the pace you want and making the point feel more like padel rather than a power contest.

Lobs and chiquitas

If you want to slow down the speed of your opponent, learn to use lobs and chiquitas. These shots help you use the length of the court and change the rhythm of the rally.

Back glass

To slow the rhythm of your opponent, you can also buy yourself time by allowing the ball to rebound from the back glass. The extra bounce and rebound can give you more time to play a controlled ball.

High lobs

A good shot for slowing the point down is the high lob. It is generally easier to execute than a chiquita and can force your opponents into a more defensive overhead.

The return

Sandy has the following tips for your return:

  • Start the point with control.
  • Do not automatically hit a fast or hard return.
  • Use a lob or chiquita when the incoming serve gives you the opportunity.
