To fully understand the importance of mobility and flexibility it’s useful to understand what they both mean. They are different, but closely linked, and both can play a role in how comfortably and efficiently you move on court.
Mobility
Mobility is essentially the ability of a joint to move actively through a range of motion. Good mobility can help players move more efficiently around the court.
Flexibility
Flexibility is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to lengthen through a range of motion. Flexible muscles can support joint movement, which is one reason mobility and flexibility are often considered together.
A high-level example
Novak Djokovic is a well-known example of an elite athlete with exceptional movement and flexibility. His ability to reach wide positions and recover demonstrates how mobility, flexibility, strength and movement skill can work together at the highest level.
The ankle joint
The ankle is heavily involved in the accelerations, decelerations and changes of direction required in padel. Calf muscles, the Achilles tendon and structures around the foot all contribute to movement and load management.
If you have persistent pain, reduced movement or an injury, seek advice from an appropriately qualified healthcare professional rather than relying on general exercise guidance alone.
Building mobility and flexibility into your routine
A gradual, active warm-up before playing can help prepare the body for the movements of padel. Separate flexibility or mobility sessions away from matches can also be useful if they are appropriate for you.
The exact routine will vary by player, training history and any previous injuries, so build changes gradually and avoid pushing through pain.
