How to move back and play the ball that goes past you
Moving back and playing a ball that has passed you is an important part of padel that does not always get enough attention. The walls can help you recover balls you might otherwise think are lost, but the key is understanding how to move back and create the right space.
Common situations
Two common situations cause positioning problems. The first is a fast passing shot that rebounds and forces you to run back. The second is when you are lobbed and need to move back to play an attacking ball such as a bajada. Anticipating the rebound is the key to getting into the right position.
Trajectory and space
A common mistake is running directly towards where the ball will contact the glass. Instead, anticipate where the ball will finish after the rebound. Give yourself enough space to move around the ball rather than allowing it to rebound into your body.
Timing and preparation
Time your movement so the contact is in front of you and prepare the racket early. Good spacing and early preparation make the recovery much easier.
