Net Position to Win Points

The right net position to win points

Many players make avoidable mistakes with their positioning at the net. Developing a better net game is an important part of improving at padel, because controlling the net gives you more opportunities to pressure your opponents.

Where to start

A useful starting position is around the second post or a small step in front. From there you can adjust around your side of the court according to the ball and your opponents.

Home base

Think of your home base as a central reference point rather than a fixed spot. From there, move in and out according to the direction of the rally, then recover your position after the shot.

Second home base

When the ball is played cross-court, your reference position can shift more centrally because you have more responsibility for covering the middle. The exact position changes with the ball, but the principle is the same: move, play the shot and recover.

Forward and backward

Two simple cues for moving at the net:

  • If the opponent is off balance or gives you an easier ball, step forward and apply pressure.
  • If the opponent is preparing to lob, create space and prepare to move backwards.
