Padel Fitness to Support Your Game and Prevent Injury

Padel is fun enough that it is easy to focus only on playing, but physical preparation can also support movement and help players cope with the demands of the game.

This article gives a general overview of the physical qualities involved in padel. It is not medical advice and cannot guarantee injury prevention. If you have pain, an injury or a medical concern, seek advice from an appropriately qualified professional.

Padel Fitness

During a game of padel we move forwards, backwards and sideways at different speeds. We bend, rotate, accelerate and decelerate, as well as reaching for volleys and overheads. A useful fitness programme therefore needs to support several different movement qualities rather than focusing on one area alone.

Professional players typically support their on-court training with strength and conditioning work. Recreational players may have less time, but can still benefit from consistent physical preparation appropriate to their level.

Flexibility and Mobility

Padel involves reaching, rotating and changing direction. Mobility and flexibility work can form part of a wider physical programme, particularly when it is tailored to the individual rather than treated as a one-size-fits-all routine.

Strength

Strength training can support the muscles used for movement, braking and repeated racket actions. Exercises should be appropriate to your current ability and progressed gradually.

Balance and Stability

Moving between shots, recovering after low balls and setting up for volleys all require balance and control. Core and lower-body strength can support those movements.

Agility

High-level padel requires fast footwork and repeated changes of direction. Recreational players can work on their movement through appropriately scaled footwork and agility drills. We have a footwork video with examples.

What do I do next?

Start with a routine that is realistic for your schedule and ability. A gradual warm-up before playing and regular strength, mobility and conditioning work can support your overall preparation for padel.

Physical preparation works alongside technique, tactics and good recovery habits. If you are unsure what is appropriate for you, seek individual advice from a qualified professional.
