After more than 15 years training at professional tennis academies, I wanted to understand how intensive padel training in Spain compared.
Across several trips I spent close to three months training at academies in Madrid, Alicante and Malaga. The experience gave me a much clearer idea of how seriously the top end of the sport approaches training.
The Training Was Harder Than I Expected
The schedule was demanding, with long on-court sessions and significant physical work. The intensity showed how far professional padel training had developed.
I was also fortunate to train around high-level professional players, which gave me a first-hand view of the pace, discipline and consistency required.
I Never Felt Like an Outsider
One of the biggest positives was how welcoming the coaches and players were. Despite language differences, people were willing to share ideas, offer feedback and include visiting players in the programme.
That openness reflected one of the qualities I have always enjoyed about the padel community.
Game-Based Training Was Central
A major difference from much of my tennis training was the emphasis on tactical, game-based situations.
Padel includes more variables around the walls, positioning, four-player movement and decision-making. As a result, a lot of the training focused on realistic situations rather than isolated technical repetition.
Would I Recommend Training in Spain?
Yes, but choose carefully.
- Find the right coach and academy. Being in Spain does not automatically make every programme suitable for you.
- Expect the level to be high. Playing stronger opponents can be uncomfortable, but it can also accelerate your understanding of the game.
- Give yourself enough time. A longer block lets you adapt to the training environment and absorb more than a very short visit.
