Defending at net

Most of the time when you are at the net you are looking to attack, but there are also situations where you need to defend. Recognise when the opponent is in a position to play aggressively and be ready for the ball to come towards you.

Learn to anticipate

You can improve your anticipation by watching your opponent's body position and recognising patterns from earlier in the match. Prepare in a compact ready position so you can react without taking a large swing.

Net position

A useful starting point for blocking volleys is around one small step in front of the second post. You can adjust from there depending on the ball and the position of your opponents.

Where to aim

Aim the block volley into open space or towards the corners. Remember that you are defending at the net, so keep the shot relatively low risk and look to regain a stronger attacking position.
