Starting Padel? Here Is What You Need
So a friend has finally persuaded you to try padel, or a new club has opened nearby and you want to know what you actually need before your first few games.
The good news is that you do not need the most expensive racket, a huge tour bag or a wardrobe full of padel-specific clothing.
What is worth buying?
1. A suitable padel racket
Your first racket does not need to be a professional model. Comfort, control and ease of use matter far more than price or branding.
For many beginners, a lighter, forgiving racket with a larger sweet spot is a sensible place to start. If possible, try a few rackets before buying.
2. Something to protect and carry it
You do not need a large professional bag. A racket sleeve, backpack or compact padel bag is enough for most new players.
3. Suitable court shoes
Footwear should give you suitable grip and lateral support for the surface you play on. If you are unsure, ask the club what type of sole works best on its courts.
4. Comfortable sports clothing
You do not need padel-specific clothing. Wear sportswear that lets you move freely and, ideally, shorts or clothing with somewhere to keep a spare ball.
Where else should you invest?
Use decent padel balls
The quality and condition of the balls make a noticeable difference to the game. Replace balls when they become too soft or inconsistent.
Learn the fundamentals early
A few good lessons or a structured beginner pathway can save you from spending months reinforcing habits that are harder to change later.

Spend your money on equipment that makes the game comfortable and enjoyable, then put most of your energy into learning how to move, position yourself and make good decisions.
